What it is
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone — the core facts of your business. A citation is any place online those facts appear: Google, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook, the Better Business Bureau, industry directories, and the long tail of data aggregators that quietly feed the rest of the web. This capability is the discipline of making sure those three facts are identical everywhere they show up — same spelling, same suite number, same phone format — and fixing the places where they've drifted.
It sounds trivial until you look. Most established businesses have moved, changed numbers, rebranded, or been auto-listed by aggregators with old or wrong details — leaving a trail of conflicting records nobody ever cleaned up.
Why it matters
Search engines build trust through corroboration. When Google sees the same name, address, and phone repeated consistently across dozens of independent sources, it gains confidence that your business is real, established, and located where you say — and consistency of citations is a well-documented factor in local and map-pack rankings. When it instead finds three different phone numbers and two old addresses, that confidence erodes, and a competitor with a cleaner record can outrank you on prominence alone.
The damage isn't only algorithmic — it's lost customers, directly. A wrong address sends someone to a closed location. An old phone number rings dead, or worse, rings a stranger. Every inconsistent listing is a small chance for a ready-to-buy customer to give up and call the next business instead. Cleaning it up is unglamorous work with a real payoff: more trust from the algorithm and fewer leads quietly dropped on the floor. It's also the bedrock the rest of the Visibility surface stands on — your Business Profile and Local Services Ads both assume the underlying record is clean and consistent.
How we install it
Citations are part of the Visibility surface and are cleaned up during the Activate phase of the 5A protocol, then audited periodically after. We start by establishing the single canonical version of your NAP — the exact spelling and format that becomes the source of truth — and matching it to your Business Profile. Then we audit the major directories and aggregators, correct or claim the listings that are wrong, suppress duplicates, and build out the citations on the platforms that carry weight for your category and area. From there it's maintained: if you ever move or change a number, the canonical record updates everywhere so the trail never fragments again. It's the least visible job on the surface and one of the first we do, because everything else assumes it's right.
What it costs
Citation cleanup and ongoing consistency checks are included on the engagement tiers that run Visibility. See the pricing ladder, or book a call and we'll run a quick audit of how consistent your listings are right now.
